Capturing the steam was a learning experience for me! What I learned was that you need a dark background, a strong light source nearby (window to the left for me), and something BOILING hot in the cup/bowl. I kept the bowl covered until right before snapping the pic when I removed the cover. My settings were ISO 1600, f/2.0, 1/250s on my Canon 6D with my Sigma Art 35mm/1.4.
